Just like your car needs to get a tune-up a couple times each year to prevent major issues, your teeth have their own set of maintenance needs. Cavities, tooth decay, plaque accumulation, and chronic bad breath are all complications that typically arise when we skip regular dental exams.
As dentists, we recommend getting your teeth examined and cleaned twice per year. But we understand that remembering to schedule or keep those appointments can be challenging, so we’ve come up with some tips for how you can more easily fit these important checkups into your busy schedule.
Schedule your next appointment at your exam
Let’s face it—scheduling a regular dental exam is not something any of us thinks about in our daily lives. In fact, do you even remember the date of your last exam? Twelve months can go by in the blink of an eye, and it may be a long time before you realize you’re overdue for an appointment.
So instead of burdening yourself with remembering to schedule an exam, go ahead and get the next one on the books at the end of your appointment. You can always reschedule, but at least you have something on the calendar that your dental office can remind you of.
Set calendar reminders in advance
Six months is a long time to remember and anticipate an appointment, so even if you mark the day on your calendar, chances are it will still sneak up on you. So when you record the date of your next exam, go ahead and add another reminder for yourself 2-3 weeks before that date. This will help you be able to schedule around your appointment or give you plenty of time to reschedule in case something comes up.
Choose a time of year and stick to it
Making dental checkups a regular part of your yearly routine over time will help you remember you’re due for a checkup even if you forget to add calendar reminders. Back-to-school season and winter holidays are a busy time, so try to choose months of the year when you’re not quite as busy. The start of a new year or the beginning of summer break are transitional times that can help you remember it’s time to schedule a dental exam if you haven’t already.
